How we use your X-rays
A plain-English explanation of what happens when you contribute X-rays to help train our dental X-ray tool.
What happens to my X-rays?
When you contribute X-rays, we store them in a private storage area that only our systems can access. They are not shown to anyone else and are not published.
Before an X-ray is used to train our dental X-ray tool, we de-identify it. Until then, it is not used for training at all.
What does de-identified mean?
We remove the things that could tell someone the X-ray is yours:
- Hidden file information (metadata), such as dates, device details and location.
- Text printed onto the image, such as your name, date of birth, the date it was taken, or the clinic name. We black it out.
- The file name. We rename every image with a random code.
If we can't remove the printed text from an image with confidence, we don't use that image for training.
De-identified images used for training are kept separately from your email address. The only link back to you is a random code, which we keep so that we can delete your X-rays if you withdraw.
Which X-rays are used?
Only bitewing and periapical X-rays from adults. Panoramic X-rays and photos of teeth are stored but never used for training. We never use X-rays of anyone under 18.
Who can see my X-rays?
A small number of toothcheck staff who run the training work, and licensed dentists working with us (in Spain) who mark up X-rays so the tool can learn from them. They see the de-identified image, not your name or email. We do not sell your X-rays or share them with insurers, advertisers or your dentist.
How long do you keep them?
We keep contributed X-rays for [RETENTION PERIOD], or until you withdraw, whichever comes first.
How do I withdraw?
Every email we send about your X-rays has a withdraw my X-rays link. Click it and confirm, and we delete the X-rays you contributed and remove them from our training data. You can also email support@toothcheck.io.
Withdrawing doesn't affect anything you've already received, such as our X-ray reading guide. If a version of our tool has already been trained, it can't "un-learn" your X-ray, but your X-ray won't be used in any future training.
Will you tell me what my X-ray shows?
No. Our AI X-ray scanner isn't live yet, and nobody reviews the X-rays you contribute. This is not a diagnosis. If you'd like a dentist to look at your X-ray, see our dental X-ray review.
Who is responsible for my data?
[DATA CONTROLLER] is responsible for your X-rays. Read our privacy policy for your rights and how to contact us.
